Iridium Phone Rentals Technical Requirement:
Portable satellite phones will only operate outside with an unobstructed view of the sky.
Coverage Area:
Iridium rental phones offer excellent world wide coverage, excluding Poland, North Korea, and North Sri Lanka.
Iridium 9555 Model:
The 9555 model phones measure 5.6" x 2.2" x 1.2" and weigh approximately 9.4 ounces.
Iridium 9505A Model:
The 9505A model phones measure 6.5" x 2.5" x 1.5" and weigh approximately 11 ounces.
Iridium 9500 Model:
The 9500 model phone is the original Iridium phone. It measures 7.5" x 2.5" x 1.5" and weighs approximately 14 ounces.

Rental Period:
Your rental period begins on the day you request the phone to arrive, and ends on the day you ship the phone back to SPD.
Placing a call:
You dial 00 + Country Code + Phone number (the US country code is 1). For example; a call made to a US phone number would look like 00-1-678-555-1212.
Receiving a call:
There are two ways to place a call to an Iridium phone. One is a direct call to the Iridium international phone number and the the other via two stage dialing (recommended).
- Two stage dialing (recommended):
The calling party places a call to US number 1-480-768-2500, and at the prompt, enters the Iridium phone number. The Iridium phone number is a 12 digit number beginning with 8816. After about 15-20 seconds, the call is transferred to the Iridium phone. With this method, the caller pays for the US call to area code 480, and the Iridium renter pays his per minute rate for the incoming call.
- Direct dialing:
The caller places an international long distance call to the special 8816 Iridium country code. From the US, the caller would dial the international access code, followed by 8816 and then the eight digit Iridium number. For example, 011-8816-xxxx-xxxx is the dialing sequence for a call placed from the US. With this method, the caller pays for the international call to the Iridium country code 8816, and the incoming call is free to the Iridium renter.
We recommend that you provide prior to your travel the Iridium phone number and dialing instructions to those you wish to allow to call you. We recommend the two stage dialing approach for several reasons, including the following:
- Calls to country code 8816 are normally very expensive. Rates in the range of $4 to $12 per minute are typical. Check with your long distance carrier for your rate to country 8816 before using this method.
- Many cell phones are not activated for international service, and therefore calls to country code 8816 are not possible.
Under either calling option, if your satellite phone is not available to receive a call, the caller will have the option to leave you a voice mail. The next time you connect to the satellite, an envelope will be displayed in the phone window indicating that you have a voice mail message.
